This casual but upscale brasserie serves an outstanding Roquefort burger and irresistible sea-salted frites— fiery moutarde, si vous voulez. The mussels can be prepared with a number of different broths—dipping with crusty bread is de rigueur. NY strip au poivre works every time. Sushi for those with that fancy as well. Champagne and plenty of wines by the glass, carafe or bottle. Regalez-vous! (Plenty of small plates for bar goers)

Located in the Avondale section of West Ashley, this understated Italian is one of Charleston’s most popular low-key dining establishments. The chef prepares delicious salads, housemade pastas, and slow-cooked entrees. Try their classic bolognese, a local’s favorite, or their famous gnocchi with shrimp, cherry tomatoes, and basil. Everything including the wine is reasonably priced.

The best grits in town if not the U.S. are served in this comfortable upscale venue. Kernels from heirloom varieties of corn are ground on the premises daily to create the creamiest grits with a profoundly fresh flavor. Chef Kevin Johnson also creates other consistently good southern-inspired cuisine using local organic veggies and, of course, fresh seafood.

Downtown’s most authentic Thai served in a clean, lively, open-kitchened dining room. Live orchids garnish special dishes like crispy duck with red curry and whole fried fish with three-pepper cilantro sauce. Pad thai and curry dishes are consistently good. No reservations are accepted, and the lines can be long, especially on the weekends, but you can always step next door to have a drink at the brother establishment, Chai’s.
