If you are in the market for a cheap lunch, the best falafel in town is waiting for you at Charles’ Grocery. One of Charleston’s many hidden treasures, it’s not likely you’ll stumble upon it. But, if you find yourself standing in front of The American theatre on Upper King while your partner photographs locations of “The Notebook,” excuse yourself for a stroll. Head down Radcliffe a few blocks to Charles’. Bypass the grocery’s namesake at the register and head to the back to fi nd his lovely Syrian-born wife, Mouna making falafels. $4 gets you a pita overfl owing with goodness, add a buck and you can have hummus as well. Be sure to fi nish before you get back to your signifi cant other, and (like a true local) you too will be a keeper of the Charles’ secret. —Seth Amos
