The site of the Avery Normal Institute (c. 1865), once one of the most prestigious African-American private schools in the country. The building now houses permanent and visiting exhibits and archives relating to the history of the Sea Islands and the “Gullah” culture. Reading room, archives and walk-in tours available to the public.
